The shape of the problem
The work is good. Everything else runs through you.
In an owner-managed business, the person who runs it is also the finance director, the head of procurement, the compliance officer and the IT department — usually after hours. The work itself is sound. What has grown around it is everything a larger business would have someone for.
You have been carrying all of it yourself, on top of the work the business exists for — and doing it well enough that the business has grown. What slips are the things that need a whole person: the price not re-tested since the last increase, the customer whose share of revenue is a feeling rather than a figure, the obligation that arrives a week early.
That is not a failing. It is what a business looks like when it has outgrown one person's hours and not yet grown into a second layer. That in-between is where we work.
